Miharu Ramen

Following our previous blog post about Gallery Hotel, we decided to grab lunch here at Miharu Ramen. This ramen stall is situated at Gallery Hotel. Miharu Ramen holds its reputation as one of the best ramen stall in Singapore.

Miharu Ramen is a Sapporo style Japanese ramen. Miharu is famous for its springy ramen noodles and deep soup base.

Hugo Wolf & Jolly Rosa sheep excited to try Miharu Ramen

The friendly staff at Miharu gave us the menu

Miharu's menu is segregated by miso flavour, shoyu flavour and shio flavour.

We ordered Tokusen Shoyu Ramen and Tokusen Shio Ramen. Both pork flavoured soup base, Sapporo style!

The Miharu Tokusen Shoyu Ramen has a thick rich soup base, both oily and salty but this is the style of Sapporo ramen. The shoyu (soy sauce) masks some of the original taste of the pork soup quite a bit.

We prefer the Miharu Tokusen Shio Ramen similarly has a rich pork flavoured soup base. You can taste the original soup flavour more on the shio ramen.

The springy Sapporo ramen noodles was more of the highlight for us. The noodles are much thicker as opposed to the Hakata style Ippudo Ramen at Mandarin Gallery.

The gyoza at Miharu was surprisingly nice as compared to many other disappointing gyoza at other ramen stalls.

Miharu Ramen, although serves authentic Sapporo ramen did not impress us as much as Santouka Ramen did (You can read our Santouka Ramen review here).

However, if you like Japanese ramen as we do, you must definitely check out Miharu Ramen at Gallery Hotel. Based on its reputation as one of the best ramen in Singapore, ramen lovers are obliged to try this stall at least once.

Ramen Champion at Iluma

NICI Beaver is at Ramen Champion at Iluma today.

Ramen Champion consolidates 6 popular ramen stalls from Japan.

Once you step in Ramen Champion at Iluma, you can see all 6 ramen stalls.

Ramen Champion is like a food court of ramen.

All you have to do is to queue at your chosen ramen stall at Ramen Champion.

Once you order your ramen, you will get a UFO looking device and a payment card and you can proceed to go back to your seats.

The device will ring when your ramen order is ready and you go back to the ramen stall to collect your ramen.

Ramen Champion's Black Shoyu Ramen from Menya Iroha

Ramen Champion's Jiro Ramen from Bario. This is similar to the Shinjiro Ramen at Menya Shinchan which we visited previously. But the portion is not as humongous as the Shinjiro Ramen.

Ramen Champion's tonkotsu ramen from Hakata Ikkousha.

We ordered an additional chicken karaage.

Out of the 3 ramen we tried at Ramen Champion, the ramen from Hakata Ikkousha is the best. The tonkotsu (pork bone soup) edges out the other two ramen which has pretty much tasteless broth.

Ramen Champion at Iluma is definitely not worth the visit. Santouka Ramen anyday!

Menya Shinchan - Shinjiro Ramen

Presenting Menya Shinchan ramen shop, the place where they serve the biggest bowl of ramen in Singapore! The legendary Shinjiro ramen.

Exactly how humongous is this bowl of Shinjiro ramen at Menya Shinchan? Well, our Hugo Wolf here is a 25cm plush. Of course we are kidding! But look at the mountain of ramen goodness.

Let's check out the Shinjiro ramen at Menya Shinchan. The first thing we could access is the ramen broth, Shinjiro ramen's broth is pretty tasteless, I mean compared to our favorite Santouka ramen and Ippudo ramen.

Menya Shinchan is quite generous with the char siew for Shinjiro ramen but the meat is not really tender and taste wise, it is not really deeply marinated.

We had to ask for a small bowl to clear out the vegetable toppings on top of the Shinjiro ramen to access to the ramen noodles below. This is one big bowl of cabbage and bean sprouts, wow..

The ramen noodles below is a monstrosity too! We really think that Menya Shinchan is crazy to design such a huge bowl of ramen. You must be really really hungry to be able to finish this bowl of Shinjiro ramen.

There is a tray of condiments on every table at Menya Shinchan. Besides the usual suspects like Shichimi (7-spice powder), Ra-Yu (chili oil), there are some weird condiments like black pepper and garlic sauce.

Let's try some black pepper on the Shinjiro ramen
*aaaaaa-choo* Hugo Wolf sneezed

This garlic sauce is yummy to go with the Shinjiro ramen, or any ramen at Menya Shinchan. We just love garlic!

Oh ya, we forgot to mention..the ramen noodles at Menya Shinchan is probably handmade there instead of imported from Japan. The words on the door says "noodle factory".

One thing we are rather picky about is that the noodles we had for our Shinjiro ramen wasn't exactly the type of ramen noodles we'd expected.

The ramen noodles at Menya Shinchan is quite thick and flat, without the usual springy texture expected from normal ramen noodles. It is just too soft to our liking.

We find that the Menya Shinchan noodles resembles the local "fry Hokkien noodles" in Singapore.

Menya Shinchan is located at Riverside View at Robertson Quay.

It took us quite a while to find Menya Shinchan because when we reached Riverside View, we were walking around and missed this little alley at the side.

Shinjiro ramen is the flagship ramen at Menya Shinchan, in case you were wondering why we only ordered Shinjiro. While we were having our meal, majority of the customers order the same ramen too.

What we like about Menya Shinchan, the entourage was pretty good.

We find one bowl of Shinjiro ramen at Menya Shinchan is too much a one person to eat. Grab a friend to share with you. Although the Shinjiro ramen wasn't exactly what we like but the monstrosity with an affordable price tag certainly attracts many.

We will be back to try other flavors of ramen at Menya Shinchan.

Santouka Ramen - Ramen Review

NICI Rob Raccoon present to you - Santouka Ramen review. As you probably know, we love Japanese ramen and we have tried a lot of famous ramen shops in Singapore before we started this blog. Santouka Ramen is the only noodle joint that we keep coming back in all these years. Direct translation of the name Santouka = "Mountain Head Fire", we know that was totally unnecessary so let's head on with the pictures!

This is half a plate of Tokusen Toroniku (specially selected pork cheeks) given to us free due to the promotion they are having. We will explain more about this heavenly delicacy in the later part.

As usual, we ordered a Tamago (Egg) to go with our ramen. To be honest the egg yolk is still a little overcooked, at least not up to our standard. We will cook our own and write up a recipe on it one day!

Waiting for the main dish to come..

Our Tokusen Toroniku Shio Ramen has arrived! This is Santouka's signature ramen. You are supposed to soak the whole plate of meat, black fungus, bamboo shoots and leeks into the soup together with the noodles. The Tokusen Toroniku meat is quite salty but some of the taste will seep into the Tonkotsu (Pork Bone Broth) giving the soup some extra flavour. And the leeks! They are so important, we love leeks!

The red plum I believe is for you to clear the taste in your mouth. Gives you a refreshing feel which works like a lemon or lime in case you get too tired of the strong flavored noodle.

Rob Raccoon looks eagerly at the mouthwatering bowl Shio Ramen. But wait, we have to take more pictures before we start digging in!

The Tokusen Toroniku - Specially selected pork meat is very unique as there is only probably less than 200 grams of this "pork cheek" meat found on each pig. Each piece of meat has their equal share of fats, so when you bite into it, there is a gelatinous feel which is similar to a well cooked braised pork knuckles.

This Tonkotsu (pork bone broth) is why Santouka is our favorite ramen joint in Singapore. The broth is rich, creamy and full of flavor, sublime is the only word I could utter. Santouka claims that the secret is having pork bone simmered over a long period of time and then adding vegetables, dried fish and kelp. We did mention in another post that Ippudo's akamaru broth is a close second but every time we go back to Santouka Ramen, it's greatness overwhelms our taste bud so much it makes every other ramen broth blast into oblivion.

The ramen noodle itself is not the best we have tasted though. We'd prefer it to be more springy like the one we had at Miharu, but this is a shortcoming that can be overlooked for the heavenly broth and meat.

Look at this piece of treasure we have found! Show you the other side below..

50% fats, 50% meat..the best ratio for a scrumptious piece of meat. Calories are on leave today, so don't worry!

Let us show you the menu so you know what to order. The broth comes in 3 choices, Shio (salt) Shoyu (soy sauce) and Miso (fermented soy beans). Shio (salt) is the signature ramen of Santouka and our favorite as it explicitly delivers the original taste of the pork bone broth. Miso is our second favorite and Shoyu is less desirable, they both mask the original taste of the broth. Your mileage may vary though, so order all 3 of them to try if you are there for the first time (like what we did a few years ago) . The cost is definitely pricier than any other ramen but it is well worth the money.

Santouka Ramen currently ranks top of the mountain for us. We have been constantly searching for something to challenge it's throne but all have come and all have fallen.
